British bishops doubt Bible's stories (Featured in The Straits Times, Singapore)
L O N D O N, Dec 28 1999 - The vast majority of British bishops - Anglicans, Roman Catholics and Methodists - do not believe the Bible's version of the creation of the world, according to a BBC radio report yesterday. Only three out of the 103 bishops questioned by the BBC said that the Scripture version of events - in which God created the world in six days - was the truth.
Eighty of them doubted the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
A quarter of them did not believe that Jesus was born to a virgin.
However, most of the bishops, who filled in a questionnaire, did agree that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and that the 10 Commandments were still valid.
Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, has teamed up with a racy British tabloid to spread the message of Christianity.
"It's part of my job as a Christian leader to seek out every available channel to try to communicate God's love to the world," Dr Carey, spiritual head of 70 million Anglicans across the globe, wrote in the mass-circulation News Of The World.
The tabloid plans to publish his book, Jesus 2000, free with next Sunday's edition.
Dr Carey said no one would be talking or thinking about the new millennium if it had not been for Christ.
"Somehow, the life and example of one apparently insignificant person has helped to shape much of what has happened since," he said.
"For me and for millions of Christians, Jesus is not just a historical figure born 2,000 years ago in a stable in Bethlehem. He is here and now, our contemporary," he added. - AFP, Reuters
